Rewards For Wellness 2023-2024

Cover of 2023-2024 RFW brochure

Rewards for Wellness is designed to help you become aware of your personal health status and participate in activities to live a healthier life. Complete Rewards for Wellness 2023-2024 activities by December 31, 2023 to earn up to $500 in co-share credit incentives. These credits will be delivered in employee paychecks in the first half of 2024.*

The 2023-2024 iteration of the Rewards for Wellness program has maintained much of what has made it so successful over the years, but there are a few newer aspects that bear noting again:

  • So many activities!  In past years, the Rewards for Wellness program offered a set number of activities totaling $500 in credits. For last year’s iteration of the Rewards for Wellness program, there were 19 available activities and the total amount of incentive credit available was $925 for women and $875 for men (difference attributable to one additional gender-specific preventive exam being available for women). This year, the counts are even higher - close to 30 total activities with $1,325 in incentive credits available for women and $1,275 available for men (again, the difference is attributable to one additional gender-specific preventive exam being available for women).  Employees will have the option to choose which activities they prefer to do in order to reach their goal. Employees are welcome to participate in all Rewards for Wellness activities but may only earn a maximum of $500 in co-share credit.
  • Wellbeats is back!  Introduced as part of the Rewards for Wellness program in 2022, Wellbeats returns in 2023.   Wellbeats is a free new feature built into the Virgin Pulse experience. Think of Wellbeats as something similar to Peloton classes but without the monthly membership fee and not just limited to stationary bike sessions. It’s much broader in scope and has something for everyone. You’ll even earn Virgin Pulse points to help qualify you for co-share credits under the quarterly Virgin Pulse levels activity.
    • 1,000+ online, on-demand fitness, nutrition, and mindfulness classes taught by certified instructors
    • 30+ goal-based programs
    • 70+ health recipes
    • Personalized recommendations and workout plans
    • Fit tests to help you track your progress
    • A virtual group feature that lets you invite friends to scheduled classes
    • Selections that are suitable for all ages, abilities, and interests
  • Earn more with Virgin Pulse!  Employees will now be able to earn up to $400 in incentive credits just by using Virgin Pulse.  That's 80% of the available credits - all just from using Virgin Pulse.
  • More step challenges!  Instead of just one per quarter, there will now be a step challenge every other month in 2023.  Register in January, track steps in February, then rinse and repeat for the rest of the year!
  • Wellness fairs return!  The State employee wellness fair events are currently scheduled for mid-March through mid-May, but of course are subject to COVID-related change.  Get your biometric screenings and meet with health professionals as well as benefits vendor representatives.
  • Track activity completion on Paystub RI.  The Wellness Information section of Paystub RI, the State Department of Administration’s payroll information system, returns in 2023.  This feature will provide full wellness activity completion data for the prior and current years.  You are free to continue manually tracking your own activity completion but when you log into Paystub RI during 2023 after May 1, August 1 and November 1, you’ll be able to see your own personal wellness activity completion data for the first, second and third quarters respectively. The fourth quarter’s completion data will be displayed in February 2024.

Review your 2023-2024 Rewards for Wellness brochure and see Program Details below to learn about the activities.

* Only active State of Rhode Island employees who are paying State medical co-share premiums at the time of the incentive delivery are eligible to receive co-share credits.

Research shows that oral health is connected to overall health in several ways. Through annual exams, cleanings and x-rays, your dentist may be able to detect early signs of cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, thyroid problems and high blood pressure. Brushing and flossing every day, along with regular dental visits and preventive care, is the best way to take care of your teeth and gums. For healthy tips and to find a dentist if you don’t have one, visit www.deltadentalri.com.

It’s been said that the eyes are a window into the soul – but they are also a window to your well-being. Whether you have 20/20 vision or need glasses to see clearly, an annual eye exam can help to catch and prevent both eye and non-eye related issues and diseases.

The obvious benefit of an eye exam is to help detect and treat vision problems, most commonly near-sightedness and far-sightedness. In addition to correcting vision, an annual eye exam can help detect, diagnose and treat eye disorders, like glaucoma, cataracts, dry eye disease and age-related macular degeneration. Eye exams can also help determine and diagnose various other health problems in the body. By monitoring changes in eyesight and the eye, doctors can catch signs for a variety of conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, thyroid eye disease and malignant eye melanoma.

To earn $50 in co-share credit

  • Use your VSP or BCBSRI coverage and have a routine eye exam anytime during 2023.
  • The exam will be tracked automatically through your VSP or BCBSRI claims activity.

To verify completion of the eye exam activity, log into your account at www.vsp.com or mybcbsri.com (depending on which coverage you used) and review your claim history for a routine eye exam during 2023.

You can also log into Paystub RI after May 1, 2023, August 1, 2023, and November 1, 2023 to review the “Wellness Information” section and confirm that you completed the eye exam activity. Quarter 4 completion data will be displayed in Paystub RI in February 2024.

Influenza is a potentially serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. Every flu season is different, and influenza infection can affect people differently, but millions of people get flu every year, hundreds of thousands of people are hospitalized and thousands to tens of thousands of people die from flu-related causes every year. An annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to help protect against flu. Vaccination has been shown to have many benefits including reducing the risk of flu illnesses, hospitalizations and even the risk of flu-related death in children.

To earn $50 in co-share credit

  • Simply get a flu shot anytime during 2023.
  • You can get your flu shot at your physician’s office, many pharmacies, a State-sponsored flu shot clinic (more information below), or perhaps from your employer

    • However, if you receive your flu shot from your employer because it is required for your job, a signed Verification Form - Flu Shot must be emailed to BCBSRI at the email address indicated on the form.

The State will be hosting a series of flu shot clinics throughout the fall months to make flu shot access even easier. Please visit the Flu Shot page for more details on when and where these clinics will be held, as well as guidance for required online registration.

To verify completion of the flu shot activity, log into your account at www.caremark.com or mybcbsri.com (depending on which coverage you used when you obtained your flu shot) and review your claim history for a flu shot during 2023. The videos and quizzes will only be available according to the following schedule:

  • Quarter 1 (January - March): Self-Care Practices
    • Overcoming Burnout
      • If you're feeling overwhelmed by everyday work and home life pressures, this workshop focusing on burnout issues will help you bring your life back into balance. Learn to identify the symptoms of burnout and explore strategies for coping with and avoiding burnout.

In this session, you will learn the impact inflation and the cost of living have on your household budget. You will also learn about the protections available to you through the FDIC and NCUA. And you will discover that you can reduce your stress if you know better to communicate your goals, values, and objectives and consciously spend your money where it matters most.
    • Take Control of Your Finances
      • For many individuals and families, dealing with finances can be challenging. If you get to the end of the month and feel like money has control over every aspect of your life, then this session is for you. All of these areas help foster a positive work environment.
    • Fostering Inclusion in the Workplace
      • Inclusive work environments are productive environments! This seminar discusses how employees and managers can create an inclusive workplace. Participants will learn to identify activities, attitudes, and assumptions that exclude coworkers. They will then explore ideas to include others in ways that enrich the office environment and their personal lives.
