Diabetes Prevention Program

Overview

The State of Rhode Island offers the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program (YDPP), a year-long program developed to help individuals showing pre-diabetic symptoms to lose weight and reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The YDPP is administered by the YMCA, and best of all, you and your qualifying dependents can participate in YDPP free of charge* as part of your State of Rhode Island medical coverage.

* See the Eligibility & Enrollment tab below for more details.

New YDPP completion incentive
Starting in 2019, If you complete 20 of the 25 sessions (excluding session 0) of the YDPP program, you will earn $500 as a one-time taxable incentive (applicable to the State employee policyholder only).

Program Details

  • The YDPP is paid for by the State for qualifying participants. See the Eligibility & Enrollment tab for more details.
  • One year of health coaching sessions at YMCA locations near you, no membership required
  • Learn healthy eating habits, light physical activity, motivation techniques and stress management
  • Free workbook and tools to track your progress
  • Content approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
  • New completion incentive Starting in 2019, if you complete 20 of the 25 sessions (excluding session 0) of the YDPP program, you will earn $500 as a one-time taxable incentive (applicable to the State employee policyholder only)

See the Diabetes Prevention Program Overview for more details on the YDPP.

Participation Eligibility

The YMCA is responsible for screening participants to ensure they meet program criteria:

  • Participants who qualify for the program must be at least 18 years old, overweight (BMI > 25)* and at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes** as indicated by a confirmatory blood value or a clinical diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes (GDM) during previous pregnancy.

The State pays for the full cost of the YDPP for first-time participants.

* Asian individual(s) BMI > 22.
** Individuals who have already been diagnosed with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes do not qualify for the YDPP.

Re-enrollment

The State will only pay for re-enrollment in the YDPP if an individual had not previously completed the program. According to the YMCA, completion is defined as attendance at 9 of the 16 core sessions. Participants that had completed 9 or more sessions in the past may re-enroll in the YDPP, but they will be responsible for the full cost of the program, and they will not be eligible for the completion incentive.

To Enroll

Take the Prediabetes Risk Test. If you scored 5 or higher*, contact Joni Bloom to determine whether you qualify for the YDPP and for instructions on how to enroll:

  • (401) 427-1843

* The scoring threshold has changed from 9 to 5 as the CDC has adopted a new risk assessment system.
