› Health Screening—Glucose ($25+$25) UPDATED 8/1/20

Glucose measures the amount of sugar in your blood. Glucose is the primary energy source in your body. Insulin (a natural hormone produced by the pancreas) controls how glucose is used in your body. When the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin then blood levels of glucose rise, this is known as Type 2 Diabetes. Over time, high blood glucose may lead to diseases of the kidneys, eyes, heart and circulatory system, and the nervous system. Having your glucose checked can help to detect diabetes and other glucose metabolism disorders.

› Health Screening—Total Cholesterol ($25+$25) UPDATED 8/1/20

Cholesterol is a fat-like substance that your body needs to function. Your body makes cholesterol because it is needed to form cell membranes, some hormones, and bile acids (which digest fat). People also consume extra cholesterol through foods, especially animal foods like meats and dairy products. Your total cholesterol is a measure of the total amount of cholesterol in your blood and is based on the HDL, LDL, and triglycerides numbers. Keeping your cholesterol levels healthy is a great way to keep your heart healthy—and lower your chances of getting heart disease or having a stroke.

According to the CDC, BMI can be used as a screening tool, but it is not diagnostic of the body fatness or health of an individual. However, BMI can be an indicator of high body fatness. High body fatness means increased weight on your frame, putting you at risk for high blood pressure (hypertension), high blood sugar, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea and breathing problems, some cancers (endometrial, breast, colon, kidney, gallbladder, and liver), clinical depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders.

Be sure to use the 2020-2021 Program Calendar to keep track of your completions.

› Health Screening—Blood Pressure ($25+$25) UPDATED 8/1/20

High blood pressure is known as the “silent killer” as it typically has no symptoms and many people are not aware they have it. New Activities as of 8/1/20 (Alternatives to Health Screenings)

Due to the cancellation of the State Employee Health and Financial Wellness Fairs, new activities have been added to provide employees more opportunities to earn incentive credits. These new activities are alternatives to the health screenings for which employees could have qualified for $200 in co-share credit at the Wellness Fairs. PLEASE NOTE: The maximum an employee can qualify for through completion of these new alternative activities is $200 in co-share credit. Overall, the maximum amount of co-share credit an employee may earn through completion of Rewards for Wellness 2020-2021 activities is $500.

› Step Challenges ($50 each)

This fall, the State will sponsor three month-long step challenges on the Virgin Pulse platform:

You’ll earn $50 in co-share credits for each challenge you sign up for and participate in. Participate in all three and earn $150 in co-share credits!

To sign up for a challenge, download the Virgin Pulse app or access the Virgin Pulse platform through www.bcbsri.com.

Please Note:

  • You must have a Virgin Pulse-connected smartphone or a Virgin Pulse-connected wearable fitness tracker to participate.

› Eye Exam ($50)

It’s been said that the eyes are a window into the soul – but they are also a window to your well-being. Whether you have 20/20 vision or need glasses to see clearly, an annual eye exam can help to catch and prevent both eye and non-eye related issues and diseases.

The obvious benefit of an eye exam is to help detect and treat vision problems, most commonly near-sightedness and far-sightedness. In addition to correcting vision, an annual eye exam can help detect, diagnose and treat eye disorders, like glaucoma, cataracts, dry eye disease and age-related macular degeneration. Eye exams can also help determine and diagnose various other health problems in the body. By monitoring changes in eyesight and the eye, doctors can catch signs for a variety of conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, thyroid eye disease and malignant eye melanoma.

Receive an eye exam anytime during 2020 and you'll receive $50 in co-share credits. The exam can be covered by your BCBSRI medical coverage or your VSP vision coverage and will be tracked automatically through claims activity.

› Flu Shot ($50)

Influenza is a potentially serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. Every flu season is different, and influenza infection can affect people differently, but millions of people get flu every year, hundreds of thousands of people are hospitalized and thousands to tens of thousands of people die from flu-related causes every year. An annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to help protect against flu. Vaccination has been shown to have many benefits including reducing the risk of flu illnesses, hospitalizations and even the risk of flu-related death in children.

Get a flu shot any time between September 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020, and you’ll earn $50 in co-share credits.

You can get your flu shot at your physician’s office, many pharmacies, a State-sponsored flu shot clinic (more information below), or perhaps from your employer.

  • If the shot is covered by your BCBSRI medical coverage or your CVS pharmacy coverage, or if you get your flu shot at a State-sponsored flu shot clinic, it will be tracked automatically.
  • oHowever, if you receive your flu shot from your employer because it is required for your job, a signed Physician Screening - Flu Shot Form must be submitted to BCBSRI by December 31, 2020. The physician screening portion of the form can be ignored if you’re submitting it to prove you obtained a flu shot outside of your BCBSRI medical coverage, your CVS pharmacy coverage, or a State-sponsored flu shot clinic.

The State will be hosting a series of flu shot clinics throughout the fall months to make flu shot access even easier. Please visit the Flu Shot page for more details on when and where these clinics will be held, as well as guidance for required online registration.

› Preventive Screenings ($50 each)

Regular preventive screenings can help find problems before they start. They also can help find problems early, when your chances for treatment and cure are better. By getting the right health services, screenings, and treatments, you are taking steps that help your chances for living a longer, healthier life.

Earn $50 in co-share credits for each applicable preventive screening you receive any time during 2020. BCBSRI will automatically track your participation. These screenings are in addition to your Annual Preventive Exam. Eligible preventive screenings are:

  • Colonoscopy
  • Pap Smear
  • Mammogram
  • PSA Testing
› Re-register for BCBSRI.com ($50)

BCBSRI will be introducing an enhanced online experience for members—one that makes it even easier to manage your plan, select a new PCP, track claims, and more. Re-register your account at www.bcbsri.com between October 1, 2020, and December 31, 2020, and you'll earn $50 in co-share credits. This new incentive is in addition to the original $50 registration incentive.

Don’t forget that you can earn additional wellness incentives (up to $500 in co-share credits) by obtaining a qualifying Annual Preventive Exam.

* Only active State of Rhode Island employees who are paying State medical co-share premium payments at the time of the incentive delivery are eligible to receive co-share credits.

OEB cannot track the completion of your activities. Download the 2020-2021 Program Calendar (updated 8/1/20) to keep track of your Rewards for Wellness activities and incentive deliveries.
